The Faces of SSCOPE-Whom Do We Benefit?

We are often asked by potential partners and donours who are the people SSCOPE benefits?  Our program of casual and part-time employment options benefits a wide variety and for many at a different time of the year.  Hence we have over 200 who will be employees this year with us, but average payrolls of 40-65 person.   Our members have a range of mental health issues from schizophrenia, to bipolar disorder to depression and anxiety. Some are on heavy doses of medication, others less so, or are on therapy. Some individuals have not been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, but they have been admitted to our program because we have ascertained that there is a need and there is a fit.  Each one is here to work and gain employment experience again.

For a look at some of the faces of SSCOPE take a look at this video from late 2011 up on Youtube.  Part 1 and Part 2

Live Fridays Brings You Beatles Night October 19

Beatles October 1962 just before Beatlemania kicks in.

It’s all set for Friday night October 19  to take a trip down memory lane with the songs of The Beatles.  Has there been a group of musicians who have been more instrumental on the shape and sound of today’s music. They are truly the ”Fab Four”.  It’s 50 years ago this month that they released their first single, “Love Me Do”.  We all remember their most famous songs: Hey Jude, Yesterday, All You Need is Love and the list goes on.  SSCOPE is very grateful to Mark David Stollard for organizing and leading the night with fellow musicians, Reg Janz and Rob Daniels.  Mark also extends a welcome to all other Manitoba musicians to come out and jam before and after.  As well there will be Beatles karaoke all afternoon on the Treasures Thrift Store Stage.  Do a Beatles tune and get 20% off your Thrift Store purchase.  Jam starts at 6:00 pm, Rob Daniels at 7:00 pm and Mark David Stollard and Reg Janz at 8:15 pm with more jam to follow. Karaoke available all afternoon starting at 1:00 pm

Thank You Letter from MLA for Burrows

Melanie Wight, the MLA for Burrows dropped us a note recently to say “thank you for the excellent work this summer”…for me and my constituents…”Do you do winter work”.

And of course we responded that we certainly do and are looking to expand our snow shoveling customers in 2012-13 to help us create more work for the every growing demand. We also for her assistance in helping getting the word out to her constituents about SSCOPE and of course she responded positively.  We are very grateful to Melanie; she is a strong supporter of our organization and our mission and purpose and our activities such as our music nights and festivals.

Mental Health has high cost to economy from lost employment: Conference Board

Mental Illness is costing the economy of Canada over $20 billion annually through lost employment and growing at nearly 2 per cent per year says a recently released Conference Board of Canada study

Helping those with mental illness return to being productive members of the economy would greatly aid our economy says the report.  Much more has to be done for mental health and through employment creation activities, it obviously concludes.

SSCOPE strongly supports the conclusions of the study. We add that our tested and proven approach to creating our own social enterprises and partnerships that gainfully employs those with persistent mental illness within the total economic sphere of the community is an important part of the range of solutions needed.

Mental Health Agency Opens New Thrift Store

New Signage Outside SSCOPE Treasures Thrift Store at 1466 Arlington St.

Our official opening ceremony is this Friday August 19th at Noon.

You can find the full text of our August 16th News Release Here

An excerpt from the release:

Unlike most “thrift” stores, the people staffing the store will be the direct beneficiaries of its operation. They will staff the store and learn new transferable skills they can use to find full time work down the road.

We know there are many places to go and shop but being right in the neighbourhood where people can get to us easily and find gently used quality goods for less is a real and needed service to our community. Best of all it supports Mental Health in a visible way by providing work for the people who are recovering from or coping with their illness”, said Rempel.

SSCOPE News: Rockin’ the Ridge at 1466 Arlington St. Great Day for SSCOPE

News Update:

1. Our May 28th event, which we moved indoors at the last minute to our new home at 1466 Arlington St., was successful with many strictly volunteer performers, great music and we don’t meant that lightly, and lots of bargain hunters all afternoon into the early evening.  Watch for pictures and detailed list of all those who performed on the website shortly.  Nearly $2,300 was raised for SSCOPE, even though our goal was just to create greater public awareness for the organization.

2.  We are almost at full capacity for our Lawn Services Business with 62 customers, a record high for the organization, up over 10-14 over previous years.  In addition we have two large Manitoba Housing commercial projects at their condos, just started in late May, which we thank them for, that will create at least 5 new job positions for our employee members.  We currently average 8 new applications a month with some months as high as 15.

3.  SSCOPE’s new office location, retail and customer service training centre, plus shop facilities will all be at 1466 Arlington St., as of June 27.  SSCOPE’s office remains at 1000 Notre Dame until the 27th.  The shop facilities and employee-member bases for lawn and moving work is at Arlington as of June 3rd.

4. SSCOPE’s AGM will be held on Friday June 24th at 11:50 am at the Buchwald Room at the Winnipeg Public Library. Carolyn Strutt of the WRHA is the guest speaker. The event is open to the public and all those interested in SSCOPE’s work are welcome.
