Decals for SSCOPE Moving Truck
No longer will SSCOPE’s 3 ton moving truck, ride around Winnipeg and surrounding areas in anonymity doing good work for the community and not being recognized for it. Yes our tongue is in our cheek. We are now officially decaled on both our Food Trailer and Moving Truck, highlighting the various services SSCOPE can provide.

SSCOPE members Dean Patteson and Veselin Kristev looking at the new decal on SSCOPE”s moving truck just before going on shift Friday, May 24.
The 3 Ton Moving Truck was purchased with the assistance of the Winnipeg Foundation, Manitoba Community Services Council and Thomas Sill Foundation, and sold and serviced by Parkside Ford. The Food Trailer was purchased and operated with the assistance of a one-time WRHA mental health employment grant and an Investors Group donation.
Next hurdle in SSCOPE’s coming out branding strategy are uniforms for all members and staff, both inside and outside staff, while on the job as we continue to look for a partner/donour. And then watch for upgrades to signage and appearance at 1466 Arlington St. exterior

SSCOPE Employee of the Month January 2013
It was a month of record snowfall for Winnipeg and at SSCOPE that meant hard work all month. One employee always said yes to more and more work to help the organization meet its customer service obligations. For that reason Donald Betenchuk has been selected as SSCOPE’s January 2013 Employee of the Month. Donald returned to SSCOPE in December after some eye surgery, and resumed right where he left off. He continues to grow and show responsibility as an employee member in our program.
Festival4MentalHealth announces Troy Westwood
Troy Westwood, former Winnipeg Blue Bomber, also known as Little Hawk in performances, and now a radio host at Sports1290 in Winnipeg, has committed to supporting SSCOPE’s Festival4MentalHealth and is our first announcement for new performers in 2013. Festival4MentalHealth Receives First Sponsor Committment
SSCOPE’s Festival4MentalHealth May 24-26, also known and marketed as Rockin’ the Bridge, has received is first sponsor committment for 2013.
The Assiniboine Credit Union has confirmed sponsorship support for the fourth consecutive year this past week for Winnipeg’s first summer festival of the year. The event involves great music, food and events over the weekend all for increased awareness of mental health issues, and SSCOPE’s work, with everyone donating their services and time to the cause.
“The Assiniboine Credit Union has been working with us for a number of years and we are pleased they see fit to continue to support our Festival and the concept of bring the community together to enjoy great music and experiences in the interest of reducing the stigma about mental health. They are one of Winnipeg’s leading corporate and business citizens in our minds, and really walk the talk,” said Bob Rempel, Executive Director of SSCOPE.
This year’s event will be held both at downtown locations and and at 1466 Arlington St., both indoors and outdoors as a Street Festival.
More volunteers and additional performers are needed and welcomed as we grow, said Rempel, and they should contact the Festival’s co-ordinator at 204 987-63000 or email “sscope@sscope.org
More announcements of additional sponsors and performers will be made in the next few weeks, including a possible title sponsor, said Rempel, as more support for mental health discussion and services is evident in the interest we see from businesses and community organizations.
SSCOPE Awarded Funding for New Program
SSCOPE has recently received a $5,000 funding award from the LITE (Local Initiatives Towards Employment) for our 2013 Employment Uplift Experience program. This program to start in April 2013, will provide wages and training funds as a pre-employment program primarily for new SSCOPE employee members.
It will be targeted to those who have been out of the work force for some time, are suffering from a mental health or related disability or issue that affects their employability, and have potential to become employees of SSCOPE’s regular employee base in our various revenue generating social enterprises.
Much of the program’s work experience will be directed through SSCOPE’s StreetSSCOPE program in which the streets and community areas around SSCOPE’s North End Winnipeg location will be tended to daily. Working in other community locations in Winnipeg that need beautification and appearance upgrades is also part of this year’s program and all requests to SSCOPE at 204 987 6300 will be considered.
Executive Director Bob Rempel said the increased funding for 2013 from LITE for the revamped program, shows the increased confidence our community funders and partners have in SSCOPE’s development plans.
As well we believe it also shows the increasing importance the community is beginning to place on addressing the growing mental health issues in our community.
It also shows that the community increasingly accepts that the unique SSCOPE model of providing gainful supported real work in a community benefical way through social enterprises it owns and operates, is a part of the solution, he said.
Recognizing SSCOPE’s New Volunteers
SSCOPE is pleased to announce three new volunteers in key positions in the organization, supporting the Executive Director.
Jason White- Jason is an experienced marketing specialist and consultant to business, particularly in the tourism business field. Through the assistance of the non profit Spark, SSCOPE was linked with Jason. We are excited about the potential for Jason to help us better market our services and program to potential new customers and partners in Winnipeg to continue to create more opportunities for our employee members and support mental health recovery and coping even better in the city.
Yan Yu Sha-a student in her second year Accounting at Red River College with top marks in her program, She has joined us as a financial and accounting assistant with responsibility at this time for the work required to create monthly financial statements. We are thrilled to see how quickly she has picked up our system.
Jim Timlick-Jim is a former director of media relations for the Blue Bombrs and an experienced editor and reporter who is assisting SSCOPE with expanding our communications initiatives in support of the growth we require for our social enterprises in order to create more employment. He has great contacts in the community and we are very happy to have him decide to join with us. Jim is also a Board of Directors candidate.
SSCOPE continues to recruit new volunteers and staff as we attempt to create the staff and volunteer team that can take the organization to our organizational goal of 400 employee members by 2016, along with four retail and office locations in Winnipeg, and programs in at least two other communities outside Winnipeg. Please contact SSCOPE at 987-6300 if you can help serve as a volunteer Team Leader within SSCOPE and help us develop new and current employment programs for our members and support the other organization objectives.
We are also hoping to be able to make an announcement shortly about the successful recruitment of a Financial and Accounting Supervisor and Executive Assistant to the Executive Director, with prime responsibility for our Festival4MentalHealth and Live Fridays events.

The Faces of SSCOPE-Whom Do We Benefit?
We are often asked by potential partners and donours who are the people SSCOPE benefits? Our program of casual and part-time employment options benefits a wide variety and for many at a different time of the year. Hence we have over 200 who will be employees this year with us, but average payrolls of 40-65 person. Our members have a range of mental health issues from schizophrenia, to bipolar disorder to depression and anxiety. Some are on heavy doses of medication, others less so, or are on therapy. Some individuals have not been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, but they have been admitted to our program because we have ascertained that there is a need and there is a fit. Each one is here to work and gain employment experience again.
For a look at some of the faces of SSCOPE take a look at this video from late 2011 up on Youtube. Part 1 and Part 2
Why Support SSCOPE?
We get asked often what benefit does your program have. Why should we contribute to your Thrift Store, come out to Music Night or our Festival4MentalHealth, leave a Legacy in our will, become a Partner with SSCOPE, etc. etc.
“A Job is Therapeutic” says this article in the Globe and Mail, mid last year. It’s worth a read if you are considering whether our program provides the kind of benefits you want to support with your dollars, your volunteerism, your other donations.
Factoid: in 2012, SSCOPE had 175 employee members who had demonstrated need for our type of program, and average payrolls in the range from 40-65 per payroll. We aim to double that by 2016, with your support. All employee members participate of their own accord following the SSCOPE method of simulating the major facets of true employment, but a supportive environment.
“Changing Lives…for a stronger healthier community”…the SSCOPE way”
SSCOPE Battles January Blizzard
SSCOPE crews and leaders took on the challenge head on and worked Saturday, Sunday and all day Monday, including overnight work for City of Winnipeg properties on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to clean up the over 120 properties SSCOPE has snow shoveling contracts for. It was a great effort by over 30 employees and staff at SSCOPE to focus only on serving our customers as quickly as possible.
Our Media News Release about Snow Shoveling work and our Christmas Tree recycling program is available HERE.
SSCOPE has a business and employment growth plan which calls for doubling of our snow shoveling and lawn cutting contracts in the next two years. This example of how we attempt to serve our customers will be a good example to tell prospective new customers.
The Board of Directors and Executive Director of SSCOPE want to officially thank all the SSCOPE members and staff who “stepped up” and met the January Blizzard challenge.
Changing Lives!…A Stronger Healthier Community…The SSCOPE Way!

Thank You!…to Wescon Enterprises for a great developing partnership
SSCOPE and Wescon Enterprises of Steinbach, specialists in large project concrete pouring throughout Manitoba, began their partnership this summer. SSCOPE supplied the crews and supervisors as a subcontractor to Wescon for a large rebar tieing project prior to the laying of concrete at a dairy barn in the Rosser district. That led to over three weeks of steady work for over 8 SSCOPE members who were developing their job skills and employment readiness.
As a result of the partnership and greater familiarity with our program by Gord and Angela Dyck, owners of Wescon, we have recently been blessed with a $1,000 donation to the development of SSCOPE member employee readiness for future construction jobs. Thank you sincerely to Wescon Enterprises for recognizing the value of the SSCOPE program: real jobs to support mental health recovery and personal growth!

Wescon Construction of Steinbach awarded SSCOPE the pre concrete work on a large dairy barn construction project just west of Winnipeg in the Rosser area. There is about three weeks of work in this project and it is epxected that this will lead to more construction related work for this company and others in the near future.
SSCOPE has made construction site projects as a priority for 2013 to increase employment opportunities for its members. We’d love to talk to you about a great win-win opportunity as well. Please be a SSCOPE ambassador and let others know about opportunities to use the SSCOPE Special Job Force program.

Food Services Funding Campaign Begins
Day by day I’m feeling stronger, Day by day I’m lasting longer, Day by day you help me make my way…the words from a popular song in the 80′s, Day by Day. The words express SSCOPE’s mission very well…to empower our member-employees to build and rebuild their lives through employment and a supportive system.
In step with our Promise of Better Days, Christmas Dinner fund raising campaign, SSCOPE has begun a campaign to gain support from the food industry and community members to help us develop our Food Services Enterprise.
We are accepting all donations of food products and food preparation equipment, as well of cash donations that will allow us to create a 12 month a year Food Services program that will allow to create a Catering and Food Preparation so we can provide prepared food to all those in need of nutritious food in the community.

SSCOPE’s Food Services program already owns and operates a seasonal Food Services Mobile Trailer since May, 2012, that employee members operate. The Little Food Feats trailer, as it is called, specializes in variations of Tacos in a Bag and Nachos with cheese, among many other foods, and is also available for rent with staff or booking at special functions. The trailer was initially purchased with help from a special employment grant from the WRHA with equipment for the trailer purchased with the help of a donation from Investors Group.
We will soon announce the date when we will begin accepting expressions of interest from group residences, homes and schools to receive our prepared food on a regular basis. We will be particularly looking for a mental health tie in but it will not be an essential requirement.
For more information or to discuss what you can possibly donate, please contact SSCOPE’s Director of Development at 987-6302 or by email: bob@sscope.org
SSCOPE receives MPI Support

Community Services Council, Winnipeg Foundation and Thomas Sill Foundation.
We thank MPI for their decision to donate a 2005 Van to SSCOPE and especially all the staff at the R&D Centre on Plessis Road for their efforts in preparing this salvage vehicle to fully rebuilt status. It will make SSCOPE’s efforts to operate our Food Services business and transport crews in peak times, immeasurably easier.

SSCOPE News-Update for October and November
What’s New At SSCOPE:
October 17 Board Meeting:
SSCOPE’s Board of Directors and chairman Ryan Clement have confirmed SSCOPE’s growth plans in supporting mental health recovery through real employment and supports by committing to grow to 400 paid employee members by 2016. 400 in 4 Years may be the catchphrase. This would double our current yearly paid employees.
The Board also agreed to further expansion by adding a second Employment Office/Training Centre and Retail operation in Winnipeg, within 6 months if possible, with more locations to come on a staged basis after that.
It also agreed to continue exploratory talks with communities like Kenora, Selkirk, Steinbach, Portage la Prairie, Brandon and others to determine if there is a basis in one or more of these communities for a local partnership for the development of a SSCOPE like social enterprise supportive employment non profit. As well, SSCOPE’s Bylaws are being reviewed for full update and revision for current and future development, with the changes to be presented to the AGM in June, 2013.
SSCOPE is embarking on a tremendous growth phase, while continuing to support each and every one of our existing members. New prospective Board members with special skills, contacts and high energy are encouraged to join us as we work to accomplish our mission.

Ten of SSCOPE staff gather for a quick minute after completing work at the St. Boniface City Hall and Court House properties on Friday morning March 2nd.
Snow Shoveling:
MPI’s donation of a crew transport Van (see below) has allowed SSCOPE to take on additional work this winter. We currently have close to 65 residential and small business customers, including a new group of private customers that we commit to clearing before 8:00 am at a separate rate structure. This is highest ever total for SSCOPE as we also enter the second year of our contract with the City of Winnipeg to clear snow from City Hall, police stations, libraries and other buildings, about 40 in total, before 8:00 am in the morning. As a result of the City’s requirements and the demands of our employees to get closer to permanent part time work within our organization, we have now put in place Permanent Overnight Crews for the next five months, providing that permanent work so many want us to provide. Each crew also has a Lead Hand promoted from within our employee group. Two new part-time Team Leaders have been hired as well.
November 8th Meeting with Provincial Minister of Housing:
SSCOPE has a meeting on Thursday November 8th with Province of Manitoba Minister of Housing Kerri Irvin Ross to discuss how to further develop and enhance the business relationship and partnership that has existed between the two organizations for the past two years. Employee members are hoping for more committed year round employment as a result of SSCOPE being awarded sustainable jobs and work after the current series of meetings with governments and business.
SSCOPE is currently approximately 65% self funded through business revenues and non governmental funder partnerships and its Board is committed to seeing that be 100% in 4 years.
SSCOPE 2012 Christmas Luncheon:

SSCOPE Christmas luncheon past. This year over 60 individuals are expected to attend, double our previous years.
This year’s Christmas Luncheon and Gift Giving is set for Friday December 21 at 11:45 am at Canton Buffet. The growing employee membership base requires us to increase our fundraising every year. Please consider supporting our members in their journey to mental health recovery through gainful employment and real work by calling the Director of Development at 987-6302 or emailing SSCOPE at sscope@sscope.org
You can view more information about SSCOPE at YouTube, on Facebook and on Twitter by clicking the links
SSCOPE receives MPI Donation
We are pleased to announce that Manitoba Public Insurance has agreed to support SSCOPE and our growth with a donation of a like new saftied Van. SSCOPE will use the van to transport an additional crew and equipment for our growing Snow Removal services, and for future Food Deliveries from our Food Services program.
This comes a year after Manitoba Hydro chose to donate a used SUV to SSCOPE to meet our needs last winter. We continue to use it to this day.
The MPI van should be operational for SSCOPE within two weeks, just in time for the busy five month snow clearing season. Yes, this will give us additional capacity as well now to add new snow customers.
Watch this site for a picture of the new van soon. SSCOPE now has five vehicles in its fleet, including one three ton cube van with power tailgate for moving and delivery jobs and other uses.
As well SSCOPE continues to accept donated vehicles from the public and business for a fair market value tax receipt which are either used for our fundraising after sale at auction, or for practice vehicles for our employees to learn additional automotive skills.
Please contact SSCOPE Director of Development at 987-6302 for more information.

Live Fridays Brings You Beatles Night October 19
It’s all set for Friday night October 19 to take a trip down memory lane with the songs of The Beatles. Has there been a group of musicians who have been more instrumental on the shape and sound of today’s music. They are truly the ”Fab Four”. It’s 50 years ago this month that they released their first single, “Love Me Do”. We all remember their most famous songs: Hey Jude, Yesterday, All You Need is Love and the list goes on. SSCOPE is very grateful to Mark David Stollard for organizing and leading the night with fellow musicians, Reg Janz and Rob Daniels. Mark also extends a welcome to all other Manitoba musicians to come out and jam before and after. As well there will be Beatles karaoke all afternoon on the Treasures Thrift Store Stage. Do a Beatles tune and get 20% off your Thrift Store purchase. Jam starts at 6:00 pm, Rob Daniels at 7:00 pm and Mark David Stollard and Reg Janz at 8:15 pm with more jam to follow. SSCOPE’s Yvette Chartand Nominated for Hero of Mental Health Award

Yvette delivering a talk to mental health professionals on how she successfully quite smoking herself .
Yvette has been a member of SSCOPE since 2010 and
she was nominated for the Heroes of Mental Health
Award specifically for her efforts to assist other SSCOPE
members to stop smoking.
This from her nomination:
Heros of Mental Health Nomination, September 7, 2012
I am pleased to nominate Yvette Chartrand in the Individual category as a Hero of Mental Health.
Yvette was diagnosed in 1982 with a mental health disability and has lived and coped most of her adult life with a mental health problem.
She has been a SSCOPE Employee Member since.2009. Since 2010 she has been a valuable member of SSCOPE’s office team serving as SSCOPE’s part-time receptionist for all customers and in member liaison duties such as employment shift bookings and Winnipeg Harvest co-ordination.
She demonstrates her care and concern about other employee-members and the overall SSCOPE program with her empathy and her efforts to explain to all who will listen about why the program is beneficial. Her work attendance, her punctuality, her committment and positive attitude make her a model employee-member.
SSCOPE has always focused only on providing casual and part-time employment.
In late 2011, SSCOPE Board and Senior Staff decided to add life improvement program options for its employee members so that the organization would become more involved of the whole life of its growing membership employee group.
In February 2012, Yvette was instrumental in helping SSCOPE senior staff in organizing SSCOPE’s first member employee self-Improvement program., Smoking Reduction and Cessation, in conjunction with MANTRA.
As we all know, the incidence of smoking among those with mental health problems is higher than the population norm and it seems particularly so at SSCOPE. She was both a leader in securing employmee members to participate, which was no easy task, given the direct tie noted earlier, and in inspiring others with her personal story of how she had stopped smoking herself five years ago.
As a result of her work and the program, in the first year, at least 5 specific individuals quit or cut back on the daily nicotine intake and a number of others were influenced to act in some way.
Yvette now serves as the in house support and resource person for those attempt to stop or reduce smoking. She is co-ordinating the second year of the program at SSCOPE, which has become ongoing.
Her province wide impact will be felt when a DVD video*** of a talk she gave in front of 300 mental health workers in Vancouver, BC, where she lived before returning to Winnipeg, will be distributed to mental health resource centres all around the province.
In the talk, the normally shy and reserved Yvette, spoke with conviction and asked mental workers to make that extra effort to help those they were already helping to help others to stop or reduce smoking.
The video tells the story about her experiences in quitting smoking. “I didn’t want to die because of a stupid cigarette”, she said. Social Assistance provided the patch and gum through the Quitnow.ca (in B.C.) organization.
She relates how her mother supported her long distance by phoning and encouraging her on a regular basis when she was quitting, plus the QuitNow counsellors helped frequently when she needed support.
Her father and mother had stopped smoking years before, which was an encouragement and motivation for her to do the same.
Yvette wants to help all others, especially people with mental health disabilities to quit, as it seems to her that almost everyone that she sees at SSCOPE or elsewhere with a mental health problem, also smokes.
“I don’t know if there is a proven direct connection, she says, but I want to help others like me to quit. We have enough health related issues already then to create more for ourselves by smoking, let alone the money it costs us to smoke when we are already on a fixed income.”
***Note: Clip from DVD video (or actual DVD) will be submitted under separate cover/delivery, as additional information related to this nomination.
prepared by: Bob Rempel, Exec. Dir. SSCOPE Inc.1466 Arlington St. Winnipeg R2X 1T8
Yvette’s a Hero in our eyes always. The actual award winners selected by the CMHA internal committee and announced on October 5 is here.

Thank You Letter from MLA for Burrows
Melanie Wight, the MLA for Burrows dropped us a note recently to say “thank you for the excellent work this summer”…for me and my constituents…”Do you do winter work”.
And of course we responded that we certainly do and are looking to expand our snow shoveling customers in 2012-13 to help us create more work for the every growing demand. We also for her assistance in helping getting the word out to her constituents about SSCOPE and of course she responded positively. We are very grateful to Melanie; she is a strong supporter of our organization and our mission and purpose and our activities such as our music nights and festivals.
